1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "To-day, then, at eleven o'clock, your father has nearlythree hundred thousand francs to pay?"
2. "Sir," said Valentine, "my grandfather wishes for a notary."At this strange and unexpected demand M. de Villefort andhis father exchanged looks. "Yes," motioned the latter, witha firmness which seemed to declare that with the help ofValentine and his old servant, who both knew what his wisheswere, he was quite prepared to maintain the contest. "Do youwish for a notary?" asked Villefort.
3. "I want none; it was a temporary indisposition. Attend toyourself; answer me." Dantes waited, expecting a question, but in vain. Villefort fell back on his chair, passed hishand over his brow, moist with perspiration, and, for thethird time, read the letter.
4. The two young men looked at Morcerf as if to say, -- "Areyou mad, or are you laughing at us?"
5. "I watched you during the whole scene of that challengeyesterday; I have been thinking of your firmness all night, and I said to myself that justice must be on your side, orman's countenance is no longer to be relied on."
6. "The 21st of May, at half-past ten in the morning, Rue duHelder, No. 27," replied the Count. The young men then rose, and bowing to the count, quitted the room. "What is thematter?" asked Albert of Franz, when they had returned totheir own apartments; "you seem more than commonlythoughtful."

1. "'Tis Caderousse, who has heard of your arrival, and nodoubt comes to congratulate you on your fortunate return."
2. "His talent? I believe he thrusts pins through the heads ofrabbits, he makes fowls eat madder, and punches the spinalmarrow out of dogs with whalebone."
3. "I, indeed? I assure you," cried Danglars, with a confidenceand security proceeding less from fear than from theinterest he really felt for the young man, "I solemnlydeclare to you, that I should never have thought of writingto Yanina, did I know anything of Ali Pasha's misfortunes."
4. "Extremely well."
5. The count departed with a sad heart from the house in whichhe had left Mercedes, probably never to behold her again.Since the death of little Edward a great change had takenplace in Monte Cristo. Having reached the summit of hisvengeance by a long and tortuous path, he saw an abyss ofdoubt yawning before him. More than this, the conversationwhich had just taken place between Mercedes and himself hadawakened so many recollections in his heart that he felt itnecessary to combat with them. A man of the count'stemperament could not long indulge in that melancholy whichcan exist in common minds, but which destroys superior ones.He thought he must have made an error in his calculations ifhe now found cause to blame himself.
6. "What was this young Corsican's name?"

1. "You are mistaken; he will not advance two leagues into theinterior of France without being followed, tracked, andcaught like a wild beast."
2. "And will you sign the contract?"
3. She loved Villefort, and he left her at the moment he wasabout to become her husband. Villefort knew not when heshould return, and Renee, far from pleading for Dantes, hated the man whose crime separated her from her lover.
4. "No, because I passed the night writing letters, -- five andtwenty despatches. I returned home at daybreak, and stroveto sleep; but my head ached and I got up to have a ride foran hour. At the Bois de Boulogne, ennui and hunger attackedme at once, -- two enemies who rarely accompany each other, and who are yet leagued against me, a sort ofCarlo-republican alliance. I then recollected you gave abreakfast this morning, and here I am. I am hungry, feed me;I am bored, amuse me."
5. "Then I have leave?"
6. At each moment, in the midst of the crowd, the buzzing, andthe laughter, the door-keeper's voice was heard announcingsome name well known in the financial department, respectedin the army, or illustrious in the literary world, and whichwas acknowledged by a slight movement in the differentgroups. But for one whose privilege it was to agitate thatocean of human waves, how many were received with a look ofindifference or a sneer of disdain! At the moment when thehand of the massive time-piece, representing Endymionasleep, pointed to nine on its golden face, and the hammer, the faithful type of mechanical thought, struck nine times, the name of the Count of Monte Cristo resounded in its turn, and as if by an electric shock all the assembly turnedtowards the door.

1. "But if I do fight, you will surely not object to giving mea lesson or two in shooting and fencing?"
2. "Confess you have dreamed this, and let us sit down tobreakfast," continued Beauchamp. But the sound of the clockhad not died away when Germain announced, "His excellencythe Count of Monte Cristo." The involuntary start every onegave proved how much Morcerf's narrative had impressed them, and Albert himself could not wholly refrain from manifestingsudden emotion. He had not heard a carriage stop in thestreet, or steps in the ante-chamber; the door had itselfopened noiselessly. The count appeared, dressed with thegreatest simplicity, but the most fastidious dandy couldhave found nothing to cavil at in his toilet. Every articleof dress -- hat, coat, gloves, and boots -- was from thefirst makers. He seemed scarcely five and thirty. But whatstruck everybody was his extreme resemblance to the portraitDebray had drawn. The count advanced, smiling, into thecentre of the room, and approached Albert, who hastenedtowards him holding out his hand in a ceremonial manner."Punctuality," said Monte Cristo, "is the politeness ofkings, according to one of your sovereigns, I think; but itis not the same with travellers. However, I hope you willexcuse the two or three seconds I am behindhand; fivehundred leagues are not to be accomplished without sometrouble, and especially in France, where, it seems, it isforbidden to beat the postilions."
3. "Privately?"
4、 "Precisely; I was sure of it," said Morcerf.
5、 "No."

"But," remarked Madame de Villefort, "all thesecircumstances which you link thus to one another may bebroken by the least accident; the vulture may not see thefowl, or may fall a hundred yards from the fish-pond."

{ And Albert took out of a little pocket-book with goldenclasps, a remnant of his old fancies, or perhaps a tendersouvenir from one of the mysterious and veiled ladies whoused to knock at his little door, -- Albert took out of thispocket-book a note of 1,000 francs.

"Sir," cried Morrel, seizing the moist hand of theparalytic, "they ask me who I am, and what right I have tobe here. Oh, you know it, tell them, tell them!" And theyoung man's voice was choked by sobs. As for the old man,his chest heaved with his panting respiration. One couldhave thought that he was undergoing the agonies precedingdeath. At length, happier than the young man, who sobbedwithout weeping, tears glistened in the eyes of Noirtier."Tell them," said Morrel in a hoarse voice, "tell them thatI am her betrothed. Tell them she was my beloved, my noblegirl, my only blessing in the world. Tell them -- oh, tellthem, that corpse belongs to me!"
