1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Good heavens!" I cried. "It is marvellous."
2. A shadow passed over the expressive face of the statesman. "Verygrave results indeed."
3. "The importance lies in the fact that the knot is left intact, andthat this knot is of a peculiar character."
4. "It is possible that he will go to some other pawnbroker in thefuture. In that case, we must begin again. On the other hand, he hashad a fair price and no questions asked, so if he is in need ofready-money he will probably come back to Bovington's. I will give youa note to them, and they will let you wait in the shop. If thefellow comes you will follow him home. But no indiscretion, and, aboveall, no violence. I put you on your honour that you will take nostep without my knowledge and consent."
5. "Too clear!" said Holmes. "That was my miscalculation. It is evidentthat his memory is much more reliable than I had thought. By theway, can we, before we go, see the window of Miss Presbury's room?"Mr. Bennett pushed his way through some shrubs, and we had a view ofthe side of the house.
6. "Quite so. Round the world. Well, good-morning. I may drop you aline in the evening." As we passed the window I caught a glimpse ofthe inspector's smile and shake of the head. "These clever fellowshave always a touch of madness." That was what I read in theinspector's smile.

1. "It seems to me to have only one drawback, Hopkins, and that isthat it is intrinsically impossible. Have you tried to drive a harpoonthrough a body? No? Tut, tut my dear sir, you must really payattention to these details. My friend Watson could tell you that Ispent a whole morning in that exercise. It is no easy matter, andrequires a strong and practised arm. But this blow was deliveredwith such violence that the head of the weapon sank deep into thewall. Do you imagine that this anaemic youth was capable of sofrightful an assault? Is he the man who hobnobbed in rum and waterwith Black Peter in the dead of the night? Was it his profile that wasseen on the blind two nights before? No, no, Hopkins, it is anotherand more formidable person for whom we must seek."
2. "Let us continue our reconstruction. He meets his death five milesfrom the school- not by a bullet, mark you, which even a lad mightconceivably discharge, but by a savage blow dealt by a vigorous arm.The lad, then, had a companion his flight. And the flight was aswift one, since it took five miles before an expert cyclist couldovertake them. Yet we survey the ground round the scene of thetragedy. What do we find? A few cattle-tracks, nothing more. I tooka wide sweep round, and there is no path within fifty yards. Anothercyclist could have had nothing to do with the actual murder, norwere there any human footmarks."
3. "And you are a benefactor of the race," said I.
4. "If you will be so good. If he can clear the matter up, well andgood. If he refuses, we have no alternative but to apply for awarrant."
5. Holmes glanced at the paper and put it into his pocket."Dorak- a curious name. Slavonic, I imagine. Well, it is animportant link in the chain. We return to London, this afternoon,Mr. Bennett. I see no good purpose to be served by our remaining. Wecannot arrest the professor because he has done no crime, nor can weplace him under constraint, for he cannot be proved to be mad. Noaction is is yet possible."
6. "What are you doing here?"

1. "This is curious," said he.
2. "And is, no doubt, devoted?"
3. "Well, that's all we could reasonably expect from Morse Hudson,"said Holmes, as we emerged from the shop. We have this Beppo as acommon factor, both in Kennington and in Kensington, so that isworth a ten-mile drive. Now, Watson, let us make for Gelder & Co.,of Stepney, the source and origin of the busts. I shall be surprisedif we don't get some help down there."
4. "Yes, my boy, these were all done prematurely before my biographerhad come to glorify me." He lifted bundle after bundle in a tender, caressing sort of way.
5. "Well, if Holmes takes the same view, that would account for hisaction, would it not? Presuming that your theory is correct, if he canlay his hands upon the man who threatened you last night he willhave gone a long way towards finding who took the naval treaty. Itis absurd to suppose that you have two enemies, one of whom robsyou, while the other threatens your life."
6. "It was the question which I was about to put to you, Professor.""To me, sir!"

1. In choosing a few typical cases which illustrate the remarkablemental qualities of my friend, Sherlock Holmes, I have endeavoured, asfar as possible, to select those which presented the minimum ofsensationalism, while offering a fair field for his talents. It is,however, unfortunately impossible entirely to separate the sensationalfrom the criminal, and a chronicler is left in the dilemma that hemust either sacrifice details which are essential to his statement andso give a false impression of the problem, or he must use matter whichchance, and not choice, has provided him with. With this short prefaceI shall turn to my notes of what proved to be a strange, though apeculiarly terrible, chain of events.
2. "We have at least an hour before us," he remarked, "for theycan hardly take any steps until the good pawnbroker is safely inbed. Then they will not lose a minute, for the sooner they dotheir work the longer time they will have for their escape. Weare at present, Doctor--as no doubt you have divined--in thecellar of the City branch of one of the principal London banks.Mr. Merryweather is the chairman of directors, and he will explainto you that there are reasons why the more daring criminals ofLondon should take a considerable interest in this cellar atpresent."
3. Holmes sank back in his chair.
4、 The Coroner: I understand that the cry of 'Cooee' was a commonsignal between you and your father?
5、 It was the young lady's turn to look surprised. "This is thesecond time that you have alluded to the date, Mr. Holmes," saidBennett. "Is it possible that it has any bearing upon the case?""It is possible- very possible- and yet I have not my fullmaterial at present."

"It was only yesterday that the chance came. I may tell you that, besides Mr. Rucastle, both Toller and his wife find something to do inthese deserted rooms, and I once saw him carrying a large blacklinen bag with him through the door. Recently he has been drinkinghard, and yesterday evening he was very drunk; and when I cameupstairs there was the key in the door. I have no doubt at all that hehad left it there. Mr. and Mrs. Rucastle were both downstairs, and thechild was with them, so that I had an admirable opportunity. Iturned the key gently in the lock, opened the door, and slippedthrough.
