1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "I arrest you for the wilful murder of Mr. Jonas Oldacre, of LowerNorwood."
2. "Now, Mr. Holder," said Holmes, "here is the corner whichcorresponds to that which has been so unfortunately lost. Might Ibeg that you will break it off."
3. "'My accomplishments, sir, may be less than you imagine,' said I. 'Alittle French, a little German, music, and drawing-'
4. "Then you will sympathize with the client in whose interests I amacting."
5. "I would give my fortune to have them back."
6. By eleven o'clock the next day we were well upon our way to theold English capital. Holmes had been buried in the morning papersall the way down, but after we had passed the Hampshire border hethrew them down and began to admire the scenery. It was an idealspring day, a light blue sky, flecked with little fleecy whiteclouds drifting across from west to east. The sun was shining verybrightly, and yet there was an exhilarating nip in the air, whichset an edge to a man's energy. All over the countryside, away to therolling hills around Aldershot, the little red and gray roofs of thefarm-steadings peeped out from amid the light green of the newfoliage.

1. "What's up, then?" asked Holmes with a twinkle in his eye. "You lookdissatisfied."
2. "In mining. He had nothing a few years ago. Then he struck gold, invested it, and came up by leaps and bounds."
3. "It has been in some points a singular case," said Holmes, flicking the horse on into a gallop. "I confess that I have been asblind as a mole, but it is better to learn wisdom late than never tolearn it at all."
4. "'I had better put my hat on, I suppose.'
5. "You will tell me if you have any news to-morrow. No doubt youwill go to the prison to see James. Oh, if you do, Mr. Holmes, do tellhim that I know him to be innocent."
6. "We shall spend the night in your room, and we shall investigate thecause of this noise which has disturbed you."

1. A shower of rain fell while we were in the train, and the heat wasfar less oppressive in Croydon than in town. Holmes had sent on awire, so that Lestrade, as wiry, as dapper, and as ferret-like asever, was waiting for us at the station. A walk of five minutes tookus to Cross Street, where Miss Cushing resided.
2. "You cannot say what it was?"
3. "I fancy," said he, "that I may be of more use at Lamberley thanhere. It is eminently a case for personal investigation. If the ladyremains in her room, our presence could not annoy or inconvenienceher. Of course, we would stay at the inn."
4. "Because I have written and asked him."
5. I was horrified for I had heard nothing of his illness. I need notsay that I rushed for my coat and my hat. As we drove back I asked forthe details.
6. "I have nothing more to say, Mr. Holmes, except that I was angrywith my wife that night for having held me back when I might havecaught the skulking rascal. She said that she feared that I might cometo harm. For an instant it had crossed my mind that perhaps what shereally feared was that he might come to harm, for I could not doubtthat she knew who this man was, and what he meant by these strangesignals. But there is a tone in my wife's voice, Mr. Holmes, and alook in her eyes which forbid doubt, and I am sure that it wasindeed my own safety that was in her mind. There's the whole case, andnow I want your advice as to what I ought to do. My own inclination isto put half a dozen of my farm lads in the shrubbery, and when thisfellow comes again to give him such a hiding that he will leave usin peace for the future."

1. "Then I, at least, am cleared," said Murdoch, rising slowly to hisfeet. "There are one or two words of explanation which I shouldgive, for I know the direction in which your inquiries have run. It istrue that I loved this lady, but from the day when she chose my friendMcPherson my one desire was to help her to happiness. I was wellcontent to stand aside and act as their go-between. Often I carriedtheir messages, and it was because I was in their confidence andbecause she was so dear to me that I hastened to tell her of myfriend's death, lest someone should forestall me in a more suddenand heartless manner. She would not tell you, sir, of our relationslest you should disapprove and I might suffer. But with your leave Imust try to get back to The Gables, for my bed will be very welcome."Stackhurst held out his hand. "Our nerves have all been atconcert-pitch," said be. "Forgive what is past, Murdoch. We shallunderstand each other better in the future." They passed outtogether with their arms linked in friendly fashion. The inspectorremained, staring at me in silence with his ox-like eyes."Well, you've done it!" he cried at last. "I had read of you, butI never believed it. It's wonderful!"
2. "One moment, sir," said he. "To actually go off with the Mazarinstone would be a more serious offence than to be found in temporarypossession of it."
3. At Canterbury, therefore, we alighted, only to find that we shouldhave to wait an hour before we could get a train to Newhaven.I was still looking rather ruefully after the rapidly disappearingluggage-van which contained my wardrobe, when Holmes pulled mysleeve and pointed up the line.
4、 We had reached the same crowded thoroughfare in which we hadfound ourselves in the morning. Our cabs were dismissed, and, following the guidance of Mr. Merryweather, we passed down anarrow passage and through a side door, which he opened for us.Within there was a small corridor, which ended in a very massiveiron gate. This also was opened, and led down a flight of windingstone steps, which terminated at another formidable gate. Mr.Merryweather stopped to light a lantern, and then conducted usdown a dark, earth-smelling passage, and so, after opening a thirddoor, into a huge vault or cellar, which was piled all round withcrates and massive boxes.
5、 "Indeed! That is very remarkable. Well, I think we had best letmatters develop a little further until we have clearer data. Is thatlawyer of yours a capable man?"

[In publishing these short sketches based upon the numerous cases inwhich my companion's singular gifts have made us the listeners to, andeventually the actors in, some strange drama, it is only naturalthat I should dwell rather upon his successes than upon hisfailures. And this not so much for the sake of his reputation-for,indeed, it was when he was at his wit's end that his energy and hisversatility were most admirable-but because where he failed ithappened too often that no one else succeeded, and that the tale wasleft forever without a conclusion. Now and again, however, itchanced that even when he erred the truth was still discovered. I havenoted of some half-dozen cases of the kind; the adventure of theMusgrave Ritual and that which I am about to recount are the two whichpresent the strongest features of interest.]

The little man stood glancing from one to the other of us withhalf-frightened, half-hopeful eyes, as one who is not sure whetherhe is on the verge of a windfall or of a catastrophe. Then hestepped into the cab, and in half an hour we were back in thesitting-room at Baker Street. Nothing had been said during ourdrive, but the high, thin breathing of our new companion, and theclaspings and unclaspings of his hands, spoke of the nervoustension within him.

"I took the lamp from him, and I examined the machine verythoroughly. It was indeed a gigantic one, and capable of exercisingenormous pressure. When I passed outside, however, and pressed downthe levers which controlled it, I knew at once by the whishing soundthat there was a slight leakage, which allowed a regurgitation ofwater through one of the side cylinders. An examination showed thatone of the india-rubber bands which was round the head of adriving-rod had shrunk so as not quite to fill the socket alongwhich it worked. This was clearly the cause of the loss of power, and I pointed it out to my companions, who followed my remarks verycarefully and asked several practical questions as to how theyshould proceed to set it right. When I had made it clear to them, Ireturned to the main chamber of the machine and took a good look at itto satisfy my own curiosity. It was obvious at a glance that the storyof the fuller's-earth was the merest fabrication, for it would beabsurd to suppose that so powerful an engine could be designed forso inadequate a purpose. The walls were of wood, but the floorconsisted of a large iron trough, and when I came to examine it Icould see a crust of metallic deposit all over it. I had stooped andwas scraping at this to see exactly what it was when I heard amuttered exclamation in German and saw the cadaverous face of thecolonel looking down at me.

"The Lone Star had arrived here last week. I went down to theAlbert Dock and found that she had been taken down the river bythe early tide this morning, homeward bound to Savannah. I wiredto Gravesend and learned that she had passed some time ago, and asthe wind is easterly I have no doubt that she is now past theGoodwins and not very far from the Isle of Wight."
