1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "A little," answered Carrie. "I have taken part in amateurperformances."
2. "No," she answered.
3. "You ought to have a piano here, Drouet," said Hurstwood, smilingat Carrie, on the evening in question, "so that your wife couldplay."
4. On the second trip of the afternoon he ran into a crowd abouthalf way along the line, that had blocked the car's progress withan old telegraph pole.
5. "By George! it's a shame they should have it all," he vaguelythought to himself on several occasions. "I didn't do anything."
6. Carrie set the table and brought in the meal.

1. "Come off the car, pardner," said one of the men in a voice meantto be conciliatory. "You don't want to take the bread out ofanother man's mouth, do you?"
2. He was wondering what she was intending.
3. "Well," he said at five o'clock, "we might as well count thechange and divide."
4. Going over to Carrie, he said:
5. "Thank you," said Carrie weakly.
6. "You want to be careful about that," was all he said.

1. In the bedroom, off the front room, was Carrie's trunk, bought byDrouet, and in the wardrobe built into the wall quite an array ofclothing--more than she had ever possessed before, and of verybecoming designs. There was a third room for possible use as akitchen, where Drouet had Carrie establish a little portable gasstove for the preparation of small lunches, oysters, Welshrarebits, and the like, of which he was exceedingly fond; and, lastly, a bath. The whole place was cosey, in that it waslighted by gas and heated by furnace registers, possessing also asmall grate, set with an asbestos back, a method of cheerfulwarming which was then first coming into use. By her industryand natural love of order, which now developed, the placemaintained an air pleasing in the extreme.
2. The firm of Speigelheim & Co., makers of boys' caps, occupied onefloor of the building, fifty feet in width and some eighty feetin depth. It was a place rather dingily lighted, the darkestportions having incandescent lights, filled with machines andwork benches. At the latter laboured quite a company of girlsand some men. The former were drabby-looking creatures, stainedin face with oil and dust, clad in thin, shapeless, cottondresses and shod with more or less worn shoes. Many of them hadtheir sleeves rolled up, revealing bare arms, and in some cases, owing to the heat, their dresses were open at the neck. Theywere a fair type of nearly the lowest order of shop-girls--careless, slouchy, and more or less pale from confinement. Theywere not timid, however; were rich in curiosity, and strong indaring and slang.
3. "One of those fellows on the Fifth Avenue line must have had ahell of a time, according to the papers," drawled another. "Theybroke his car windows and pulled him off into the street 'forethe police could stop 'em."
4. Still, in the morning, when her household duties would infringeupon her and Hurstwood sat there, a perfect load to contemplate, her fate seemed dismal and unrelieved. It did not take so verymuch to feed them under Hurstwood's close-measured buying, andthere would possibly be enough for rent, but it left nothingelse. Carrie bought the shoes and some other things, whichcomplicated the rent problem very seriously. Suddenly, a weekfrom the fatal day, Carrie realised that they were going to runshort.
5. At that hour, when Broadway is wont to assume its mostinteresting aspect, a peculiar individual invariably took hisstand at the corner of Twenty-sixth Street and Broadway--a spotwhich is also intersected by Fifth Avenue. This was the hourwhen the theatres were just beginning to receive their patrons.Fire signs announcing the night's amusements blazed on everyhand. Cabs and carriages, their lamps gleaming like yellow eyes, pattered by. Couples and parties of three and four freelymingled in the common crowd, which poured by in a thick stream, laughing and jesting. On Fifth Avenue were loungers--a fewwealthy strollers, a gentleman in evening dress with his lady onhis arm, some club-men passing from one smoking-room to another.Across the way the great hotels showed a hundred gleamingwindows, their cafes and billiard-rooms filled with acomfortable, well-dressed, and pleasure-loving throng. All aboutwas the night, pulsating with the thoughts of pleasure andexhilaration--the curious enthusiasm of a great city bent uponfinding joy in a thousand different ways.

1. "Well, then, what makes you look so?"
2. One of the principal comedy companies of the day was playing anengagement at the Grand Opera House. Here Carrie asked to seethe manager of the company. She little knew the trivialauthority of this individual, or that had there been a vacancy anactor would have been sent on from New York to fill it.
3. "Oh, we'll be right back, Miss Madenda," said one of the chaps, bowing. "You wouldn't think we'd keep you over time, now, wouldyou?"
4、 "Well, it's too much, anyhow," said Carrie. "I oughtn't to bemade to pay for it. I've got more than I can pay for now."
5、 Night approaching, and a slightly more conversational feelingprevailing, Carrie said:

  • 孙永壮 08-10

This he did, but soon grew rapidly worse. It seemed all he coulddo to crawl to his room, where he remained for a day.

  • 游建伟 08-10

"Oh, he's not here now," said the policeman.

  • 郑心穗 08-10

Idleness, however, and the sight of the company, backed by thepolice, triumphing, angered the men. They saw that each day morecars were going on, each day more declarations were being made bythe company officials that the effective opposition of thestrikers was broken. This put desperate thoughts in the minds ofthe men. Peaceful methods meant, they saw, that the companieswould soon run all their cars and those who had complained wouldbe forgotten. There was nothing so helpful to the companies aspeaceful methods. All at once they blazed forth, and for a week there was storm andstress. Cars were assailed, men attacked, policemen struggledwith, tracks torn up, and shots fired, until at last streetfights and mob movements became frequent, and the city wasinvested with militia.

  • 库恩 08-10

"Oh, oh," she said, "she doesn't know what she has done."

  • 阿萨德 08-09

{ "That's the way most girls begin," he went on, "who go on thestage. It's a good way to get experience."

  • 窦艳 08-08

      Carrie was too much astonished and delighted to think ofmentioning forty. She was nearly beside herself, and almosthugged Lola, who clung to her at the news.}

  • 路易 08-08

Hurstwood only cleared his throat by way of acknowledgment.

  • 游步道 08-08

For some days thereafter he put on his overcoat regularly in themorning and sallied forth. On these ventures he first consoledhimself with the thought that with the seven hundred dollars hehad he could still make some advantageous arrangement. Hethought about going to some brewery, which, as he knew, frequently controlled saloons which they leased, and get them tohelp him. Then he remembered that he would have to pay outseveral hundred any way for fixtures and that he would havenothing left for his monthly expenses. It was costing him nearlyeighty dollars a month to live.

  • 丹阜 08-07

On Sunday evening Carrie dined with him at a place he hadselected in East Adams Street, and thereafter they took a cab towhat was then a pleasant evening resort out on Cottage GroveAvenue near 39th Street. In the process of his declaration hesoon realised that Carrie took his love upon a higher basis thanhe had anticipated. She kept him at a distance in a ratherearnest way, and submitted only to those tender tokens ofaffection which better become the inexperienced lover. Hurstwoodsaw that she was not to be possessed for the asking, and deferredpressing his suit too warmly.

  • 李紫微 08-05

{ "Mr. Stevens," he said, referring to the author, "is preparing alittle song, which he would like you to sing next week."

  • 洪溪 08-05

"Well," he said, as he came in from the hall in his workingclothes, and looked at Carrie through the dining-room door, "howdid you make out?"
