1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "The first time, he broke my arm; the second, he wounded mein the breast; and the third time, made this large wound."The Englishman turned down his shirt-collar, and showed ascar, whose redness proved it to be a recent one. "So that, you see, there is a deadly feud between us."
2. "Oh," replied Caderousse, "did he know so little of hislovely betrothed? Mercedes might have been a queen, sir, ifthe crown were to be placed on the heads of the loveliestand most intelligent. Fernand's fortune was already waxinggreat, and she developed with his growing fortune. Shelearned drawing, music -- everything. Besides, I believe, between ourselves, she did this in order to distract hermind, that she might forget; and she only filled her head inorder to alleviate the weight on her heart. But now herposition in life is assured," continued Caderousse; "nodoubt fortune and honors have comforted her; she is rich, acountess, and yet" -- Caderousse paused.
3. "Yes, my dear boy," replied the old man, "it is veryfortunate."
4. About two o'clock the following day a calash, drawn by apair of magnificent English horses, stopped at the door ofMonte Cristo and a person, dressed in a blue coat, withbuttons of a similar color, a white waistcoat, over whichwas displayed a massive gold chain, brown trousers, and aquantity of black hair descending so low over his eyebrowsas to leave it doubtful whether it were not artificial solittle did its jetty glossiness assimilate with the deepwrinkles stamped on his features -- a person, in a word, who, although evidently past fifty, desired to be taken fornot more than forty, bent forwards from the carriage door,on the panels of which were emblazoned the armorial bearingsof a baron, and directed his groom to inquire at theporter's lodge whether the Count of Monte Cristo residedthere, and if he were within. While waiting, the occupant ofthe carriage surveyed the house, the garden as far as hecould distinguish it, and the livery of servants who passedto and fro, with an attention so close as to be somewhatimpertinent. His glance was keen but showed cunning ratherthan intelligence; his lips were straight, and so thin that,as they closed, they were drawn in over the teeth; hischeek-bones were broad and projecting, a never-failing proofof audacity and craftiness; while the flatness of hisforehead, and the enlargement of the back of his skull, which rose much higher than his large and coarsely shapedears, combined to form a physiognomy anything butprepossessing, save in the eyes of such as considered thatthe owner of so splendid an equipage must needs be all thatwas admirable and enviable, more especially when they gazedon the enormous diamond that glittered in his shirt, and thered ribbon that depended from his button-hole.
5. "Nay," answered Monte Cristo, with the most gentlemanly air,"'tis not for such trifling sums as these that your bankinghouse is to be incommoded. Then, you can let me have somemoney, can you not?"
6. "Leave the saucepan," said Dantes; "you can take it awaywhen you bring me my breakfast." This advice was to thejailer's taste, as it spared him the necessity of makinganother trip. He left the saucepan.

1. "Yes, yes," replied Dantes eagerly; "I would beg of you, whosee so completely to the depths of things, and to whom thegreatest mystery seems but an easy riddle, to explain to mehow it was that I underwent no second examination, was neverbrought to trial, and, above all, was condemned without everhaving had sentence passed on me?"
2. "But she saw no one?"
3. "Real?" interrupted the count, smiling.
4. "Mademoiselle," said Albert, replying to this direct appeal,"I can give you very exact information on that subject, aswell as on most points relative to the mysterious person ofwhom we are now conversing -- the young woman is a Greek."
5. "Ah, sir," said Caderousse with a sigh, "it is easy toperceive I am not a rich man; but in this world a man doesnot thrive the better for being honest." The abbe fixed onhim a searching, penetrating glance.
6. "Are not you the person who brought me a letter," inquiredFranz, "from the Viscount of Morcerf?"

1. Danglars immediately recognized him as the man who hadcalled out in such a furious manner, "Put in your head!" Butthis was not the time for recrimination, so he assumed hismost agreeable manner and said with a gracious smile, --"Excuse me, sir, but are they not going to give me anydinner?"
2. "Confiteor," said Caderousse, putting the diamond on hislittle finger; "I was mistaken; but those thieves ofjewellers imitate so well that it is no longer worth whileto rob a jeweller's shop -- it is another branch of industryparalyzed."
3. "I beg a thousand pardons," said the count, "there isnothing the matter, but I slipped down and broke one of yourpanes of glass with my elbow. Since it is opened, I willtake advantage of it to enter your room; do not disturbyourself -- do not disturb yourself!" And passing his handthrough the broken glass, the count opened the door. Morrel, evidently discomposed, came to meet Monte Cristo less withthe intention of receiving him than to exclude his entry."Ma foi," said Monte Cristo, rubbing his elbow, "it's allyour servant's fault; your stairs are so polished, it islike walking on glass."
4. "Upon my word, monsieur," said Danglars with affectedcarelessness, "I attach no sort of value to such emptydistinctions; but the fact is, I was made baron, and alsochevalier of the Legion of Honor, in return for servicesrendered, but" --
5. At the moment Caderousse quitted his sentry-like watchbefore the door, the road on which he so eagerly strainedhis sight was void and lonely as a desert at mid-day. Thereit lay stretching out into one interminable line of dust andsand, with its sides bordered by tall, meagre trees, altogether presenting so uninviting an appearance, that noone in his senses could have imagined that any traveller, atliberty to regulate his hours for journeying, would chooseto expose himself in such a formidable Sahara. Nevertheless, had Caderousse but retained his post a few minutes longer,he might have caught a dim outline of something approachingfrom the direction of Bellegarde; as the moving object drewnearer, he would easily have perceived that it consisted ofa man and horse, between whom the kindest and most amiableunderstanding appeared to exist. The horse was of Hungarianbreed, and ambled along at an easy pace. His rider was apriest, dressed in black, and wearing a three-cornered hat;and, spite of the ardent rays of a noonday sun, the paircame on with a fair degree of rapidity.
6. "Listen, Hermine; I consider myself as brave as most men,but when I drew from my breast the little key of thestaircase, which I had found in my coat -- that little keywe both used to cherish so much, which you wished to havefastened to a golden ring -- when I opened the door, and sawthe pale moon shedding a long stream of white light on thespiral staircase like a spectre, I leaned against the wall, and nearly shrieked. I seemed to be going mad. At last Imastered my agitation. I descended the staircase step bystep; the only thing I could not conquer was a strangetrembling in my knees. I grasped the railings; if I hadrelaxed my hold for a moment, I should have fallen. Ireached the lower door. Outside this door a spade was placedagainst the wall; I took it, and advanced towards thethicket. I had provided myself with a dark lantern. In themiddle of the lawn I stopped to light it, then I continuedmy path.

1. "My dear Albert," said Debray, "what you tell us is soextraordinary."
2. "I?" said Monte Cristo; "my dear Viscount, how have youdiscovered that I did not like M. Franz! I like every one."
3. "But would you ruin me?"
4、 Several persons hurried up to M. de Villefort, who sat halfbowed over in his chair, offering him consolation, encouragement, and protestations of zeal and sympathy. Orderwas re-established in the hall, except that a few peoplestill moved about and whispered to one another. A lady, itwas said, had just fainted; they had supplied her with asmelling-bottle, and she had recovered. During the scene oftumult, Andrea had turned his smiling face towards theassembly; then, leaning with one hand on the oaken rail ofthe dock, in the most graceful attitude possible, he said:"Gentlemen, I assure you I had no idea of insulting thecourt, or of making a useless disturbance in the presence ofthis honorable assembly. They ask my age; I tell it. Theyask where I was born; I answer. They ask my name, I cannotgive it, since my parents abandoned me. But though I cannotgive my own name, not possessing one, I can tell them myfather's. Now I repeat, my father is named M. de Villefort, and I am ready to prove it."
5、 "Pray do so."
