1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Well, well!" said Holmes, impatiently. "A good cyclist does notneed a high road. The moor is intersected with paths, and the moon wasat the full. Halloa! what is this?"
2. by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
3. "My name," said he, "is John Openshaw, but my own affairshave, as far as I can understand, little to do with this awfulbusiness. It is a hereditary matter; so in order to give you anidea of the facts, I must go back to the commencement of theaffair.
4. "Would your mistress see Dr. Watson?"
5. "But he had no pipe."
6. Our unfortunate client rose with a ghastly face.

1. It was a few weeks before my own marriage, during the days when Iwas still sharing rooms with Holmes in Baker Street, that he came homefrom an afternoon stroll to find a letter on the table waiting forhim. I had remained indoors all day, for the weather had taken asudden turn to rain, with high autumnal winds, and the Jezail bulletwhich I had brought back in one of my limbs as a relic of my Afghancampaign throbbed with dull persistence. With my body in oneeasy-chair and my legs upon another, I had surrounded myself with acloud of newspapers until at last, saturated with the news of the day,I tossed them all aside and lay listless, watching the huge crestand monogram upon the envelope upon the table and wondering lazily whomy friend's noble correspondent could be.
2. "Nearly ten weeks ago-to be more accurate, on the twenty-third ofMay-he called me into his private room, and, after complimenting me onthe good work which I had done, he informed me that he had a newcommission of trust for me to execute.
3. "Remarkable, is it not? But consider the facts. Is it acoincidence that it is found at the very point where the train pitchesand sways as it comes round on the points? Is not that the place wherean object upon the roof might be expected to fall off? The pointswould affect no object inside the train. Either the body fell from theroof, or a very curious coincidence has occurred. But now consider thequestion of the blood. Of course, there was no bleeding on the line ifthe body had bled elsewhere. Each fact is suggestive in itself.Together they have a cumulative force."
4. "'"And so shall we be, my boy. There's a brace of pistols forevery mothers son of us; and if we can't carry this ship, with thecrew at our back, it's time we were all sent to a young misses'boarding-school. You speak to your mate upon the left to-night, andsee if he is to be trusted."
5. It was evening of a dull, foggy November day when, having left ourbags at the Chequers, Lamberley, we drove through the Sussex clay of along winding lane and finally reached the isolated and ancientfarmhouse in which Ferguson dwelt. It was a large, stragglingbuilding, very old in the centre, very new at the wings withtowering Tudor chimneys and a lichen-spotted, high-pitched roof ofHorsham slabs. The doorsteps were worn into curves, and the ancienttiles which lined the porch were marked with the rebus of a cheese anda man after the original builder. Within, the ceilings were corrugatedwith heavy oaken beams, and the uneven floors sagged into sharpcurves. An odour of age and decay pervaded the whole crumblingbuilding.
6. "When evening came I felt that it would be an imprudence to leave soprecious a thing in the office behind me. Bankers' safes had beenforced before now, and why should not mine be? If so, how terriblewould be the position in which I should find myself! I determined, therefore, that for the next few days I would always carry the casebackward and forward with me, so that it might never be really outof my reach. With this intention, I called a cab and drove out to myhouse at Streatham, carrying the jewel with me. I did not breathefreely until I had taken it upstairs and locked it in the bureau of mydressing-room.

1. "My head buzzed, and I could hardly sit still in my chair. Butsuddenly a little chill of doubt came upon me.
2. My friend waited until the door had closed behind the retreatingsecretary.
3. "Who did?"
4. "This is indeed an unexpected development," said my friend when wehad regained the cab. "I wonder if the death was natural, or whetherthe poor old fellow killed himself! If the latter, may it be takenas some sign of self-reproach for duty neglected? We must leave thatquestion to the future. Now we shall turn to the Cadogan Wests."A small but well-kept house in the outskirts of the town shelteredthe bereaved mother. The old lady was too dazed with grief to be ofany use to us, but at her side was a white-faced young lady, whointroduced herself as Miss Violet Westbury, the fiancee of the deadman, and the last to see him upon that fatal night.
5. My client grinned mischievously.
6. "Please God you may! If you will excuse me, gentlemen, I will goup to my wife's room and see if there has been any change."He was away some minutes, during which Holmes resumed hisexamination of the curiosities upon the wall. When our host returnedit was clear from his downcast face that he had made no progress. Hebrought with him a tall, slim, brownfaced girl.

1. It may be that the police resented the intrusion of an amateur, orthat they imagined themselves to be upon some hopeful line ofinvestigation; but it is certain that we heard nothing from them forthe next two days. During this time Holmes spent some of his timesmoking and dreaming in the cottage; but a greater portion incountry walks which he undertook alone, returning after many hourswithout remark as to where he had been. One experiment served toshow me the line of his investigation. He had bought a lamp whichwas the duplicate of the one which had burned in the room ofMortimer Tregennis on the morning of the tragedy. This he filledwith the same oil as that used at the vicarage, and he carefully timedthe period which it would take to be exhausted. Another experimentwhich he made was of a more unpleasant nature, and one which I amnot likely ever to forget.
2. "Yes, sir, he is dead."
3. We heard the door open, a few hurried words, and then quick stepsupon the linoleum. Our own door flew open, and a lady, clad in somedark-coloured stuff, with a black veil, entered the room."You will excuse my calling so late," she began, and then, suddenly losing her self-control, she ran forward, threw her armsabout my wife's neck, and sobbed upon her shoulder. "Oh, I'm in suchtrouble!" she cried; "I do so want a little help."
4、 -THE END-
5、 "The old story, Watson. A treacherous friend and a fickle wife. Itwould appear that Amberley has one hobby in life, and it is chess. Notfar from him at Lewisham there lives a young doctor who is also achess-player. I have noted his name as Dr. Ray Ernest. Ernest wasfrequently in the house, and an intimacy between him and Mrs. Amberleywas a natural sequence, for you must admit that our unfortunate clienthas few outward graces, whatever his inner virtues may be. Thecouple went off together last week- destination untraced. What ismore, the faithless spouse carried off the old man's deed-box as herpersonal luggage with a good part of his life's savings within. Can wefind the lady? Can we save the money? A commonplace problem so faras it has developed, and yet a vital one for Josiah Amberley.""What will you do about it?"

"He gave an exclamation; that was all. I waited but he neverreturned. Then I walked home. Next morning, after the office opened, they came to inquire. About twelve o'clock we heard the terrible news.Oh, Mr. Holmes, if you could only, only save his honour! It was somuch to him."

"You must obtain the release of young Neligan as soon aspossible," said Holmes. "I confess that I think you owe him someapology. The tin box must be returned to him, but, of course, thesecurities which Peter Carey has sold are lost forever. There's thecab, Hopkins, and you can remove your man. If you want me for thetrial, my address and that of Watson will be somewhere in Norway- I'llsend particulars later."

Holmes sat for some time in silent thought. He had lit the oldestand foulest of his pipes.

"These shoes," it ran, "were dug up in the moat of Holdernesse Hall. They are for the use of horses, but they are shaped below with acloven foot of iron, so as to throw pursuers off the track. They aresupposed to have belonged to some of the marauding Barons ofHoldernesse in the Middle Ages."

{ "My father is dead, Mr. Holmes. He was James Smith, who conductedthe orchestra at the old Imperial Theatre. My mother and I were leftwithout a relation in the world except one uncle, Ralph Smith, whowent to Africa twenty-five years ago, and we have never had a wordfrom him since. When father died, we were left very poor, but oneday we were told that there was an advertisement in the Times, inquiring for our whereabouts. You can imagine how excited we were, for we thought that someone had left us a fortune. We went at onceto the lawyer whose name was given in the paper. There we, met twogentlemen, Mr. Carruthers and Mr. Woodley, who were home on a visitfrom South Africa. They said that my uncle was a friend of theirs, that he had died some months before in great poverty inJohannesburg, and that he had asked them with his last breath tohunt up his relations, and see that they were in no want. It seemedstrange to us that Uncle Ralph, who took no notice of us when he wasalive, should be so careful to look after us when he was dead, but Mr.Carruthers explained that the reason was that my uncle had justheard of the death of his brother, and so felt responsible for ourfate."

      "Your name is very familiar to me, Mr. Holmes," said he, smiling."And of course I cannot pretend to be ignorant of the object of yourvisit. There has only been one occurrence in these offices which couldcall for your attention. In whose interest are you acting, may I ask?""In that of Mr. Percy Phelps," answered Holmes.}

  • 沈舒 08-01

Holmes seemed struck by the theory thus put forward, and hecontinued to walk up and down for some time, lost in thought andconsuming cigarette after cigarette.

"I have some papers here," said my friend Sherlock Holmes as wesat one winter's night on either side of the fire, "which I reallythink, Watson, that it would be worth your while to glance over. Theseare the documents in the extraordinary case of the Gloria Scott, andthis is the message which struck Justice of the Peace Trevor dead withhorror when he read it."
