1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "You did, Doctor, but none the less you must come round to myview, for otherwise I shall keep on piling fact upon fact on youuntil your reason breaks down under them and acknowledges me to beright. Now, Mr. Jabez Wilson here has been good enough to callupon me this morning, and to begin a narrative which promises tobe one of the most singular which I have listened to for sometime. You have heard me remark that the strangest and most uniquethings are very often connected not with the larger but with thesmaller crimes, and occasionally, indeed, where there is room fordoubt whether any positive crime has been committed. As far as Ihave heard it is impossible for me to say whether the present caseis an instance of crime or not, but the course of events iscertainly among the most singular that I have ever listened to.Perhaps, Mr. Wilson, you would have the great kindness torecommence your narrative. I ask you not merely because my friendDr. Watson has not heard the opening part but also because thepeculiar nature of the story makes me anxious to have everypossible detail from your lips. As a rule, when I have heard someslight indication of the course of events, I am able to guidemyself by the thousands of other similar cases which occur to mymemory. In the present instance I am forced to admit that thefacts are, to the best of my belief, unique."
2. "We have known for some time that a clever gang was at work," saidthe inspector. "They have been turning out half-crowns by thethousand. We even traced them as far as Reading, but could get nofarther, for they had covered their traces in a way that showed thatthey were very old hands. But now, thanks to this lucky chance, Ithink that we have got them right enough."
3. "Perhaps you will explain what you are talking about."
4. "I was not and am not sure which; but I knew that the shipmust have an American origin."
5. "I had an answer to my advertisement."
6. "Very good. It is only in her presence that we can clear thematter up. Let us go up to her."

1. "Burglary!" cried the colonel, with his coffee-cup in mid-air."Murder!"
2. "We have got to the deductions and the inferences," said Lestrade, winking at me. "I find it hard enough to tackle facts, Holmes, withoutflying away after theories and fancies."
3. "'Where have you been?' I asked, more sternly.
4. "Well, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, you may look for your tramp, and whileyou are finding him we will hold on to our man. The future will showwhich is right. Just notice this point, Mr. Holmes: that so far aswe know, none of the papers were removed, and that the prisoner is theone man in the world who had no reason for removing them, since he washeir-at-law, and would come into them in any case."
5. "'Ah, Jack,' she said, 'I have just been in to see if I can be ofany assistance to our new neighbours. Why do you look at me like that,Jack? You are not angry with me?'
6. "Keep that," said Holmes, quietly putting his foot upon it; "youwill find it useful at the trial. But this is what we reallywanted." He held up a little crumpled piece of paper.

1. The baronet shook his head impatiently. "It is easy to preach," saidhe. "Perhaps you would have felt differently if you had been in myposition. One cannot see all one's hopes and all one's plans shatteredat the last moment and make no effort to save them. It seemed to methat it would be no unworthy resting-place if we put her for thetime in one of the coffins of her husband's ancestors lying in what isstill consecrated ground. We opened such a coffin, removed thecontents, and placed her as you have seen her. As to the old relicswhich we took out, we could not leave them on the floor of thecrypt. Norlett and I removed them, and he descended at night andburned them in the central furnace. There is my story, Mr. Holmes, though how you forced my hand so that I have to tell it is more than Ican say."
3. "But why should he think that this disease which he has contractedis Eastern?"
4. "Most devoted."
5. "There are numerous small fry, but few who would handle so big anaffair. The only men worth considering are Adolph Meyer, of 13 GreatGeorge Street, Westminster; Louis La Rothiere, of Campden Mansions,Notting Hill; and Hugo Oberstein, 13 Caulfield Gardens, Kensington. The latter was known to be in town on Monday and is now reported ashaving left. Glad to hear you have seen some light. The Cabinet awaitsyour final report with the utmost anxiety. Urgent representations havearrived from the very highest quarter. The whole force of the State isat your back if you should need it.
6. "No, thank you, sir. I breakfasted before I came round. I spentthe night in town, for I came up yesterday to report."

1. "I must explain to you, Mr. Holmes, that to-morrow is the firstday of the examination for the Fortescue Scholarship. I am one ofthe examiners. My subject is Greek, and the first of the papersconsists of a large passage of Greek translation which the candidatehas not seen. This passage is printed on the examination paper, and itwould naturally be an immense advantage if the candidate could prepareit in advance. For this reason, great care is taken to keep thepaper secret.
2. "He's a fine fellow," said Holmes as we came out into Whitehall."But he has a struggle to keep up his position. He is far from richand has many calls. You noticed, of that his boots had been resoled. Now, Watson, I won't detain you from your legitimate work anylonger. I shall do nothing more to-day unless I have an answer to mycab advertisement. But I should be extremely obliged to you if youwould come down with me to Woking to-morrow by the same train which wetook yesterday."
3. "Yes; I shall not feel easy until I have told my story.""Then my servant will call a cab, and I shall be with you in aninstant." I rushed upstairs, explained the matter shortly to mywife, and in five minutes was inside a hansom, driving with my newacquaintance to Baker Street.
4、 "My dear Holmes, what do you mean?"
5、 "Well, how do you explain it?"

"I am naturally observant, as you may have remarked, Mr. Holmes, andI soon had a pretty good plan of the whole house in my head. There wasone wing, however, which appeared not to be inhabited at all. A doorwhich faced that which led into the quarters of the Tollers openedinto this suite, but it was invariably locked. One day, however, asI ascended the stair, I met Mr. Rucastle coming out through this door, his keys in his hand, and a look on his face which made him a verydifferent person to the round, jovial man to whom I was accustomed. His cheeks were red, his brow was all crinkled with anger, and theveins stood out at his temples with passion. He locked the door andhurried past me without a word or a look.

{ "No, no, my dear sir; such a course is utterly impossible. When oncethe law is evoked it cannot be stayed again, and this is just one ofthose cases where, for the credit of the college, it is most essentialto avoid scandal. Your discretion is as well known as your powers, andyou are the one man in the world who can help me. I beg you, Mr.Holmes, to do what you can."

Ten minutes later we were both in a cab, and rattling through thesilent streets on our way to Charing Cross Station. The first faintwinter's dawn was beginning to appear, and we could dimly see theoccasional figure of an early workman as he passed us, blurred andindistinct in the opalescent London reek. Holmes nestled in silenceinto his heavy coat, and I was glad to do the same, for the air wasmost bitter, and neither of us had broken our fast.
