1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Yesterday, however, just as I was thinking of leaving the office,my clerk entered to say there was a gentleman waiting who wished tosee me upon business. He brought up a card, too, with the name of'Colonel Lysander Stark' engraved upon it. Close at his heels came thecolonel himself, a man rather over the middle size, but of anexceeding thinness. I do not think that I have ever seen so thin aman. His whole face sharpened away into nose and chin, and the skin ofhis cheeks was drawn quite tense over his outstanding bones. Yetthis emaciation seemed to be his natural habit, and due to no disease, for his eye was bright his step brisk, and his bearing assured. He wasplainly but neatly dressed, and his age, I should judge, would benearer forty than thirty.
2. "I need not say that I have confirmed it, Watson," said Holmes asI returned the paper. "Do you know anything of this man Damery?""Only that this name is a household word in society."
3. "Yes, yes, I am- but you are too late. She is dead."
4. The Count shook his head.
5. "'On no conditions?' I asked at the bidding of our tyrant."'Only if I see her married in my presence by a Greek priest whomI know.'
6. "Now, if I could have done this without the knowledge of ProfessorMoriarty, all would have been well. But he was too wily for that. Hesaw every step which I took to draw my toils round him. Again andagain he strove to break away, but I as often headed him off. I tellyou, my friend, that if a detailed account of that silent contestcould be written, it would take its place as the most brilliant bit ofthrust-and-parry work in the history of detection. Never have Irisen to such a height, and never have I been so hard pressed by anopponent. He cut deep, and yet I just undercut him. This morning thelast steps were taken, and three days only were wanted to complete thebusiness. I was sitting in my room thinking the matter over when thedoor opened and Professor Moriarty stood before me.

1. "I am sorry for you, Lady Hilda. I have done my best for you. Ican see that it is all in vain."
2. The landlady thought for a moment.
3. "Surely, Mr. Barnes! We certainly shall. By the way, that was a mostbeautiful spaniel that was whining in the hall."
4. "Exactly! Well, Watson, you have done all that a good friendcould. You can now disappear from the scene."
5. There was something that touched me as I read this letter, somethingpitiable in the reiterated appeals to bring Holmes. So moved was Ithat even had it been a difficult matter I should have tried it, butof course I knew well that Holmes loved his art, so that he was everas ready to bring his aid as his client could be to receive it. Mywife agreed with me that not a moment should be lost in laying thematter before him, and so within an hour of breakfast-time I foundmyself back once more in the old rooms in Baker Street.Holmes was seated at his side-table clad in his dressing-gown andworking hard over a chemical investigation. A large curved retortwas boiling furiously in the bluish flame of a Bunsen burner, andthe distilled drops were condensing into a two-litre measure. Myfriend hardly glanced up as I entered, and I, seeing that hisinvestigation must be of importance, seated myself in an armchairand waited. He dipped into this bottle or that, drawing out a fewdrops of each with his glass pipette, and finally brought thetest-tube containing a solution over to the table. In his right handhe held a slip of litmus-paper.
6. "Yes," said I. "You have not made it clear what was ColonelMoran's motive in murdering the Honourable Ronald Adair?""Ah! my dear Watson, there we come into those realms ofconjecture, where the most logical mind may be at fault. Each may formhis own hypothesis upon the present evidence, and yours is as likelyto be correct as mine."

1. "To an end?"
2. It was, therefore, an empty room into which Billy, a minute later, ushered Count Sylvius. The famous game-shot, sportsman, andman-about-town was a big, swarthy fellow, with a formidable darkmoustache shading a cruel, thin-lipped mouth, and surmounted by along, curved nose like the beak of an eagle. He was well dressed, but his brilliant necktie, shining pin, and glittering rings wereflamboyant in their effect. As the door closed behind him he lookedround him with fierce, startled eyes, like one who suspects a trapat every turn. Then he gave a violent start as he saw the impassivehead and the collar of the dressing-gown which projected above thearmchair in the window. At first his expression was one of pureamazement. Then the light of a horrible hope gleamed in his dark, murderous eyes. He took one more glance round to see that there wereno witnesses, and then, on tiptoe, his thick stick half raised, heapproached the silent figure. He was crouching for his final springand blow when a cool, sardonic voice greeted him from the open bedroomdoor:
3. "You have no fear of burglars?"
4. "You know me, then?"
5. "Yes, sir. I'm afraid it has spoilt your beautiful bust, for itpassed right through the head and flattened itself on the wall. Ipicked it up from the carpet. Here it is!"
6. "'Well, what then?' he asked.

1. "None at all. You are most welcome. The place will, of course, heshut up, but Mrs. Saunders is in the basement up to four o'clock andwould let you in with her key."
2. "You will appreciate it, Watson, when I tell you that thisgentleman, Mr. Trevor Bennett, is professional assistant to thegreat scientist, lives under his roof, and is engaged to his onlydaughter. Certainly we must agree that the professor has every claimupon his loyalty and devotion. But it may best be shown by takingthe necessary steps to clear up this strange mystery."
3. "Not for worlds. But why were you doing this?"
4、 "It will be verified or disproved at the trial. Meanwhile, come whatmay, Colonel Moran will trouble us no more. The famous air-gun ofVon Herder will embellish the Scotland Yard Museum, and once again Mr.Sherlock Holmes is free to devote his life to examining thoseinteresting little problems which the complex life of London soplentifully presents."
5、 "How very absurd! I never noticed that before."

      "Where are they now?"

  • 周岗峰 08-14

       "'Certainly not. But why?'

"There was a pause then for about ten minutes, as if the personwere waiting to see whether the noise had awakened me. Then I hearda gentle creaking as the window was very slowly opened. I couldstand it no longer, for my nerves are not what they used to be. Isprang out of bed and flung open the shutters. A man was crouchingat the window. I could see little of him, for he was gone like aflash. He was wrapped in some sort of cloak which came across thelower part of his face. One thing only I am sure of, and that isthat he had some weapon in his hand. It looked to me like a longknife. I distinctly saw the gleam of it as he turned to run.""This is most interesting," said Holmes. "Pray what did you dothen?"

      "Well, if you wish to see Godfrey, you shall. It is no doing ofmine, but you have forced my hand. Ralph, tell Mr. Godfrey and Mr.Kent that in five minutes we shall be with them."}

"Too clear!" said Holmes. "That was my miscalculation. It is evidentthat his memory is much more reliable than I had thought. By theway, can we, before we go, see the window of Miss Presbury's room?"Mr. Bennett pushed his way through some shrubs, and we had a view ofthe side of the house.

"I made up my mind that the fellow was in hiding in the house. When I paced one corridor and found it six feet shorter than thecorresponding one below, it was pretty clear where he was. I thoughthe had not the nerve to lie quiet before an alarm of fire. We could,of course, have gone in and taken him, but it amused me to make himreveal himself. Besides, I owed you a little mystification,Lestrade, for your chaff in the morning."

       "Where is it?"

{ "Yes, yes, brandy!" he cried. "The man is at his last gasp. It wasall I could do to bring him here. He fainted twice upon the way."Half a tumbler of the raw spirit brought about a wondrous change. Hepushed himself up on one arm and swung his coat from his shoulder "ForGod's sake, oil, opium, morphia!" he cried. "Anything to ease thisinfernal agony!" The inspector and I cried out at the sight. There, crisscrossed upon the man's naked shoulder, was the same strangereticulated pattern of red, inflamed lines which had been thedeath-mark of Fitzroy, McPherson.

      "No, sir, certainly not."
