1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "I saw you," Hurstwood said, genially, the next time Drouetdrifted in to his polished resort, from which he could not stayaway. He raised his forefinger indicatively, as parents do tochildren.
2. "Well, now, I'll tell you what we are trying to do," went on Mr.Quincel. "We are trying to get a new set of furniture for thelodge. There isn't enough money in the treasury at the presenttime, and we thought we would raise it by a littleentertainment."
3. "Hurstwood!" exclaimed Carrie, rising. Her face had changedseveral shades since this announcement was made. She lookedwithin and without herself in a half-dazed way.
4. Though Hurstwood did not know it, he was dealing with one whosefeelings were as tender and as delicate as this. He did notknow, but it was this in her, after all, which attracted him. Henever attempted to analyse the nature of his affection. It wassufficient that there was tenderness in her eye, weakness in hermanner, good nature and hope in her thoughts. He drew near thislily, which had sucked its waxen beauty and perfume from below adepth of waters which he had never penetrated, and out of oozeand mould which he could not understand. He drew near because itwas waxen and fresh. It lightened his feelings for him. It madethe morning worth while.
5. "Yes," she answered.
6. "Well, you can't get out of Canada with it," said the man.

1. "Let's go to the matinee this afternoon," said Mrs. Vance, whohad stepped across into Carrie's flat one morning, still arrayedin a soft pink dressing-gown, which she had donned upon rising.Hurstwood and Vance had gone their separate ways nearly an hourbefore.
2. He looked at her tenderly, but received no reply."You think I have deceived you badly, but I haven't. I didn't doit willingly. I'm through with my wife. She hasn't any claimson me. I'll never see her any more. That's why I'm here to-night. That's why I came and got you."
3. "Well, you'll get more at the next place if you want it," went onthe girl, who admired Carrie very much. "You do fine, and themanager knows it."
4. "I'll go in their barber shop and get a shave," he thought.
5. Minnie's flat, as the one-floor resident apartments were thenbeing called, was in a part of West Van Buren Street inhabited byfamilies of labourers and clerks, men who had come, and werestill coming, with the rush of population pouring in at the rateof 50,000 a year. It was on the third floor, the front windowslooking down into the street, where, at night, the lights ofgrocery stores were shining and children were playing. To Carrie, the sound of the little bells upon the horse-cars, as theytinkled in and out of hearing, was as pleasing as it was novel. She gazed into the lighted street when Minnie brought her intothe front room, and wondered at the sounds, the movement, themurmur of the vast city which stretched for miles and miles inevery direction.
6. At Rector's, Drouet had met Mr. G. W. Hurstwood, manager ofFitzgerald and Moy's. He had been pointed out as a verysuccessful and well-known man about town. Hurstwood looked thepart, for, besides being slightly under forty, he had a good, stout constitution, an active manner, and a solid, substantialair, which was composed in part of his fine clothes, his cleanlinen, his jewels, and, above all, his own sense of hisimportance. Drouet immediately conceived a notion of him asbeing some one worth knowing, and was glad not only to meet him,but to visit the Adams Street bar thereafter whenever he wanted adrink or a cigar.

1. As he undid his collar and unfastened his studs, preparatory towashing his face and changing his clothes, he dilated upon histrip. Carrie could not help listening with amusement to hisanimated descriptions.
2. Carrie smiled.
3. "Yes, I saw George," returned Drouet. "Great old boy, isn't he?We had quite a time there together."
4. There had been appearing in the papers about this time rumoursand notices of an approaching strike on the trolley lines inBrooklyn. There was general dissatisfaction as to the hours oflabour required and the wages paid. As usual--and for someinexplicable reason--the men chose the winter for the forcing ofthe hand of their employers and the settlement of theirdifficulties.
5. "By George, I won't stand that!" thought the thespian. "I'm notgoing to have my work cut up by some one else. Either she quitsthat when I do my turn or I quit."
6. "Yes, it does."

1. The game of deception was up with Drouet. He did not try tosimulate indifference further.
2. "My money is nearly gone," he said, "and I hardly know where it'sgone to."
3. "I meant to," he said, "but you know I forgot it until it was toolate to do any good."

"Look here, my man," said Hurstwood authoritatively, "you don'tunderstand anything about this case, and I can't explain to you.Whatever I intend to do I'll do without advice from the outside. You'll have to excuse me.""Well, now, there's no use of your talking that way," said theman, "when you're in the hands of the police. We can make a lotof trouble for you if we want to. You're not registered right inthis house, you haven't got your wife with you, and thenewspapers don't know you're here yet. You might as well bereasonable."

{ It had been several years since Minnie had seen Carrie, and inthat time the latter's character had developed a few shades.Naturally timid in all things that related to her ownadvancement, and especially so when without power or resource, her craving for pleasure was so strong that it was the one stayof her nature. She would speak for that when silent on all else.

"Well, how are you feeling?" he asked of her. She was engaged inlooking out of the window.
